LABOR DAY CELEBRATION IS A GRAND SUCCESS

Crowd is Estimated At Three Thousand
The members of Jennings County Post, No. 91, The American Legion are to be congratulated upon the success
of their Labor Day celebration for although the temperature was near the 100 mark, about three thousand people flocked to the fair
ground to spend the day in social enjoyment of the company of their friends, to partake of the many good things which the war Mothers
and Legion Auxilary had provided for the hungry and to enjoy the entertainment provided for the occasion.
Everything which the boys had advertised took place according to the schedule announced and after the various
wrestling matches, races, contests, etc., the programs ended with a real, for sure automobile race.
The auto race was for twenty-five miles and was won by W. L. Ball, of Ewing, Ind. who was driving a Banks Special
Chevrolet car, owned by D. L. Banks of Brownstown. He made the twenty-five miles in 45 minutes and 5 seconds. Ted Everroad, of
Columbus, came in second in an
Oakland car. His time was 45 minutes and 52 1/2 seconds. H. E. Thompson of Greensburg was third. He
drove a
Fronty Ford, owned by Powell and Thompson of Greensburg. He was running Ball a close second when he was forced to leave the
track on the forty-fourth lap on account of a broken axle. Other entries in the race were Leo Gorman of Vallonia, in a Ford Special, who went out for
repairs after 21 laps and John Hubbard of Columbus, who was in the race for only 13 laps.
Winners of some of the other contests were:
Bicycle race: Scott Sherman first; Robert Day, second; Winfred Erwin third.
Barrel race: Oscar Willman first; Jaames Erwin, second; Calvin Hunt, third.
Running race: George Ledford first, Wm. Colvin, second; Roger Whitcomb third.
Hopping race: Richard Hanna, 1st, Standon Kane second; Lawrence Kane, third.
Girls' running race: Valma Roane first; Helen Thomas second; Helen Day third.
Boys' 100 yard dash: Clarence Redding, first; Harold Stagman, second; John Ramey, third.
Sack race: Bob Calvert, first; Richard Staten, second; Edward Finnerty, third.
Watermelon contest: Marion Crabtree, first; Wm. A. Shuck, second; Sanford Harper, third.
Water bucket race: John Ramey, first; Wm. A. Shuck, second; Roy Taylor, third.
Paul Strickland won first place in the horse race. He was riding Willard Semon's horse. James Burke won first with his pony
in the pony race. Paul Strickland won first in the mule race.
In the women's hitching contest, Mrs. Joseph Shulthies won first and Mrs. Myrtle Demaree second.
